Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) Program
Gifted and Talented Education Programs were established in California in the 1960’s to meet the needs of young people with exceptionally high ability. Those students considered ‘gifted’ within state and federal definitions demonstrate abilities well beyond their age group peers, and by law must receive special instruction to support and develop these abilities.
Our district serves gifted students in grades K-12 showing exceptional Intellectual Ability. Our program consists primarily of Differentiated Instruction, where teachers adapt the instruction in the regular classroom for those learners ready to do advanced work involving depth, complexity, acceleration, and higher order thinking skills.
GATE programs are operated in approximately 800 districts located in all 58 counties. There are over 480,000 public school students that have been identified as gifted and talented in the state.
