New Information
New Immunization Required for 7th-12th Graders entering the 2011-2012 School Year
*Student's will NOT attend school until they receive this booster shot!
A new school immunization law requires all students entering 7th through 12th grades in the 2011-2012 school year in California to be immunized with a pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine booster called Tdap.
Pertussis is a very contagious respiratory disease that can be severe and last for months. The immunity received from either early childhood immunization or pertussis disease wears off over time, leaving older students and adults susceptible again to pertussis. Immunization with Tdap can protect students, schools and communities against pertussis.
The new requirement affects all students – current, new, and transfers – in public and private schools. The law has two phases:
- For the 2011-2012 school year, all students entering into 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grades will need proof of a Tdap shot before starting school.
- For 2012-2013 and future school years, all students entering into 7th grade will need proof of a Tdap shot before starting school.

School Health Offices
Each AUSD school has a health office and Health Office Assistant who has been trained in basic CPR and First Aid. Some of the care provided by the Health Office Assistant, under the direction of the District Nurse, includes basic first aid, medication administration, immunization enforcement, and communicable disease control.
Parents are encouraged to communicate with the School Health Office Assistant and District Nurse on any health related issues so we can better meet your child’s health needs in school to promote the best learning environment for your student.
To contact your student’s Health Office Assistant, please go to each school’s website. To contact the District Nurse, please call her directly at (510) 337 7118 or e-mail at

It is important to protect students from infectious diseases that are transmitted within the school setting. Your child may be excluded from school in accordance with California Education Code section 48210-48214 and section 49451. “Whenever there is a reason to believe that the child is suffering a recognized contagious or infectious disease, he/she shall be sent home and shall not be permitted to return until the school authorities are satisfied that any contagious disease does not exist.”
Illness
Please do not send your child to school if he/she has any of the following symptoms:
1. Fever (over 100 degrees). Please keep your child home for 24 hours after a fever without the aid of Tylenol or Advil)
2. Eyes that are red, swollen, crusting or draining
3. Untreated, draining ears or earache
4. Diarrhea
5. Nausea or vomiting (if the pupil has vomited the night before or in the morning, please DO NOT send pupil to school)
6. Severe sore throat
7. Skin rashes of unknown origin or contagious rash requires a clearance from a health care provider that student may return to school.
If a pupil is at school with any of the above, the parent/guardian will be called to pick up the pupil. Under certain circumstances, the parent may be asked to consult a physician and to provide a written note from a doctor indicating that the pupil may return to school.
Certain health problems can be a barrier to optimal learning. In order to identify and modify some of the more frequently occurring problems, the district conducts the following screenings as mandated by the State of California: (Ed Code 49455, 49456, 49452.5)
• Vision: Grades 1, 3, 5, and 8, and first year in the California public school system
• Color Vision: Grade 1
• Hearing: Grades 1, 2, 5 and 8, and first year in the California public school system
• Scoliosis: Girls - Grade 7, Boys - Grade 8
Students who are being assessed for initial and three year review for special education services, and students referred by a teacher or parent will also be tested for vision and hearing. Those who do not pass the initial screening will be retested. Parents will be notified and referred for further follow-up only when a problem is identified. Parents may submit a written request for exemption from any of the above health screenings.
All students participating in a sport in high school must have a physical exam form on file with us. In order to be valid for the next school year the exam must be dated after July 1st. The exam can be performed by your regular health care provider.

Dental evaluations that have happened within the 12 months prior to school entry also meet this requirement. The law specifies that the assessment must be done by a licensed dentist or other licensed or registered dental health professional.

Parents must fill out the cards completely, including all pertinent health information and physician and dentist phone numbers to call in an emergency. If there is a change of address or phone number for any person listed on the card during school year, please notify the school immediately (Ed Code 49408)
