School Closures/Scenario B Archive
Please be advised that much of the information in the documents below from the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 school years is now out of date and has been superseded by subsequent events. On the one hand, some of what is discussed in the documents as plans is now being implemented thanks to the passage of Measure A in March 2011. On the other hand, some of what is discussed (e.g., consideration of a “Plan B” scenario without a parcel tax) reflects contingency planning for a contingency that did not occur, also thanks to the passage of Measure A. We keep these documents here as helpful background for those interested in the community engagement and extensive planning work done in 2009-2010 and 2010-2011. But we also caution that the information here is out of date so that those looking for current information should not rely on these archived materials.
After a ten month process, the Board of Education approved a five year Master Plan for Alameda Unified School District. For additional information about the ten month community engagement process and supporting documentation, visit the Master Plan Archive.
On June 22, 2010 an election was held for a parcel tax, Measure E, which was intended to provide critical funding to AUSD. Measure E garnered more than 65% support but fell just short of the two-thirds support required to pass.
Because of this unfortunate turn, AUSD began to implement "Scenario B" of the Master Plan. However, things took a turn for the better on March 8, 2011 when Alameda voters passed a new parcel tax, Measure A. Because of this turn in events, most of the planned work for "Scenario B" was haulted.
The implementation of Scenario B had three elements:
School Closures/Consolidations
At the November 30 Board Meeting the Board reviewed the Final Recommendation for School Closures/Consolidations for the 2011/12 and 2012/13 school year. At the December 14th Board meeting, the Board approved the Final School Closure/Consolidation Plan.
Phase I
"The Superintendent's implementation plan shall recommend restructuring and/or closure of one or more of the District's secondary schools (middle and high schools". The plan shall recommend the closure of one or more elementary schools for implementaion at the commencement of the 2011-2012 school year."
Phase II
"Phase 2 of the Superintendent's implementation plan shall recommend restructuring and/or closure of additional elementary schools to realize the maxium cost savings for implementation at the commencement of the 2012-2013 school year."
Parcel Tax 2011
On March 8, 2011 Alameda voters approved Measure A with 68.01% voting yes. Read full press release. This new parcel tax will generate approximately $12 million per year for seven years. It has replaced the former Measure A (passed in 2005) and Measure H (passed in 2008). Because of the great turn of events, the remainder of the work towards "Scenario B" was haulted.
