Open House

Earlier this year, the Alameda Education Association (AEA) demanded that the District cancel Open House.  Although the District initially responded that it would continue to hold Open House and that attendance for teachers would be voluntary, on Monday, February 7, the District agreed to AEA’s demand that Open House be formally cancelled.   AEA has taken the position that holding Open House this year is not permitted by the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) entered into between the teachers’ union and the District in March of 2010.

The School Board asked AEA to reconsider its position and to allow teachers to voluntarily participate in this community tradition in recognition of the fact that, in passing Measure A last year, Alameda citizens so overwhelming voted with their pocketbooks to support our schools and our teachers.  AEA did not change their position.

It has become increasingly clear that our valued teachers are caught in the middle of this dispute.  Rather than put our teachers in the difficult position of having to choose between disappointing parents or being at odds with their union, we are agreeing to cancel Open House.  In addition, we are mindful of the many other issues we face in negotiations with AEA and we need to focus our efforts on resolving class size for next year, the school calendar and a successor agreement.  Spending money to litigate Open House in grievance arbitration and defending ourselves at the Public Employee Relations Board against AEA’s charge that we have engaged in an unfair labor practice by scheduling Open House is not where we want to prioritize our efforts or our funds at this time.

We encourage parents and community members to take advantage of the many other opportunities to visit their neighborhood schools this spring with other traditional events and we look forward to the return of Open House for the 2012-2013 school year.

For the timeline of events leading up this decision, please review this FAQ on the Labor Relations page of our website.
