Roundtable Mission

The mission of the AUSD LGBTQ Round Table is to foster an inclusive, safe, and welcoming environment for all students in the Alameda Unified School District (AUSD). The AUSD LGBTQ Round Table will do so by supporting children of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) families and students who identify as or are perceived by others to be lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or gender non-conforming. Goals

  1. Provide resources to the school district to ensure the success of LGBTQ-oriented curricula.
  2. Collaborate with community-based (e.g., business, civic, faith) organizations committed to inclusive, safe spaces for youth and families. 
  3. Develop parent/community groups for support and advocacy of the LGBTQ community.
  4. Coordinate pro bono legal support to help AUSD ensure and safeguard legal rights for LGBTQ youth and families. 
  5. Connect LGBTQ youth and families in the community and schools with appropriate community-based support resources.
 

Activities

  1. Organize community-based events to educate about the history and presence of LGBTQ people and families in our schools and city.
  2. Facilitate Harvey Milk Day planning to foster community awareness and understanding.
  3. Assist with AB 9 and SB 48 implementation to promote safe schools.
  4. Coordinate diversity awareness activities/events in all AUSD schools.
  5. Support students, staff, and families who are LGBTQ and allies of the LGBTQ community.

2019 Every Pronoun Belongs Here Poem and Poster Contest

The LGBTQ Round Table's 7th annual Poem and Poster Contest is now open! The theme: Through your original art and writing show that whether you use she, he, they, she, or her  pronouns, you are part of our community, a citizen, and we accept all citizens.

The contest is open to all AUSD students in grades 4 through 12. Contestants can write a poem, design a poster, or both. Awards will be given to winners grades 4-8 and 9-12. The overall winning poster will be displayed in AUSD schools and offices.

Submissions are due by 5 pm on April 30th can be delivered or emailed to Susan Davis either at the AUSD District Office or via email (sdavis@alamedaunified.org) or to Gene Kahane either at Books, Inc. on Park St or via email (genekahane@gmail.com). All entries must include name, school, teacher, email, and phone number.
 

Everyone One Belongs Here Campaign

In 2015, students and adults on the LGBTQ roundtable designed a poster that features a rainbow-colored shield with the words "Everyone Belongs Here" against a backdrop of statements such as, "All Faiths," "All Gender Identities," "All LGBTQ," "All Nationalities," "All Families," and "All Ethnicities."Everyone belongs here

The poster was made available to any teachers, counselors, administrators, or AUSD staff that wanted to display it.  "The law mandates that educators treat all students equally regardless of their diversity," says Audrey Hyman, president of the Alameda Education Association. "This poster allows teachers and counselors to further emphasize that they are working to make school sites safe, welcoming environments for all students."

The Alameda Collaborative for Children, Youth, and Families, Alameda City Council, Alameda Education Foundation, Alameda PTA Council,  Alameda Chamber of Commerce, and AEA and CSEA 27 and 860 have all signed on to the campaign.

The California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS)

The California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) is the largest statewide survey of resiliency, protective factors,and risk behaviors in the nation.  Across California, the CHKS has led to a better understanding of the relationship between students' health behaviors and academic performance, and is frequently cited by state policymakers and the media as a critical component of school improvement efforts to help guide the development of more effective health, prevention, and youth development programs.  The CHKS also helps schools meet certain requirements of Title IV of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) of 2001.  NCLB requires that CDE collects data on the incidence, prevalence, age of onset, and perception of health risks and social disapproval of drug use by youth, and violence in schools and communities through anonymous student and teacher surveys.  The CHKS provides schools, districts, counties, and the state with a standard tool that promotes the collection of uniform data within and across local education agencies that are also comparable to existing state and national survey datasets.
