Student COVID-19 Testing FAQ

What can we expect at the testing site?

A friendly, safe, and pain-free experience!  All community areas are sanitized between tests, and safe distancing will be in-place.  All personnel will be wearing masks, and we ask that your child wears a mask until the test takes place.

What type of test is it?

Specimens are collected via a non-invasive nasal swab that enters about one inch into the nostril. Specimens will then be run via the gold-standard RT-PCR method, which detects and identifies SARS-CoV-2 in patients.

Who is eligible for the test?

Currently all AUSD students are eligible to take advantage of COVID-19 testing at our onsite collection centers. No student will be denied a test due to lack of health insurance. Parents and guardians will not be billed for the cost of the test, including co-payment.

Can family members get tested?

At this time we can only test AUSD students. You can find information on where other family members can get tested in Alameda County here.

Can my child take a test if she has COVID-19 symptoms?

No - students with symptoms cannot be tested at our sites. If your child has symptoms, please contact your school office and healthcare provider.

When does testing become mandatory?

Because Alameda County is now in the Orange Tier of COVID-19 risk and restrictions, testing is not currently mandatory. We strongly encourage our families to take advantage of our free testing, however.

If I have more than one student, do I need to make more than one appointment?

Yes - please make one appointment for each child and fill out paperwork for each child. If you choose not to make an appointment, you can bring them both at the same time and they will get tested one after another.

My student cannot tolerate a nose swab. Is there an alternative method?

We are looking into this option and hope to have information soon.

How much time does it take?

The entire testing process (including filling out paperwork) takes less than 5 minutes. The actual test takes about 10 seconds.

How much does the test cost?

The COVID-19 test is free to all families. If you have health insurance, the lab will bill the insurance company for the cost of the test. You do not have to pay a co-payment, however. The test is also free to any students whose families do not have health insurance.

What do I need to bring?

The lab needs an initial Intake Form the first time you visit, as well as a consent form. We would prefer that you fill these two forms before coming to the test site.  This would speed up the process for all. You will only have to provide this information once.  You also will be asked to provide your health insurance info on the form. There is no cost to you.

The two forms are available to download on our Student COVID-19 Testing web page

How will we receive our test results?

You will receive your child’s test results via email 24-48 hours after the test.  The email will come from AUSDCovid19SiteTesting@nationallabs.com. The email will say that the COVID-19 was “Detected,” “Not Detected,” or “Inconclusive.”  AUSD will have access to reports as needed to track COVID-19 cases and clusters.

I never received my student’s result. What should I do?

Please check your spam or junk email folder for an email from AUSDCovid19SiteTesting@nationallabs.com. If you still can’t find it, please email fieldservices@nationallabs.com for help.

Who can I contact if I have questions?  Please send an email to: StudentC19@alamedaunified.org.

Do I need to show proof of a negative test to get admitted into school?

No. AUSD is receiving the test results. If your student tests positive, we will contact you and your school site. Otherwise, you can assume you can go to school.

Can my student go to school while we are waiting for the test results?

Yes, students who are asymptomatic should continue attending school while waiting for test results. In most cases we expect to get the weekly result back before your student’s cohort is due back on campus.

Please see AUSD’s Student COVID-19 Testing page for the schedule

Do I have to go to a designated testing center or can I go to either site?

Currently testing is being provided at Alameda High Main Gym and Ruby Bridges Multipurpose Room. You may take your student to either site.
